ATHLETE
Justine
Bouchard
An all-round exceptional
athlete, Justine Bouchard has distinguished herself in the sport of
wrestling. In her seventeen year amateur wrestling career that started
in Wetaskiwin when she was 12, Justine has amassed an amazing record.
Besides twenty-six provincial gold medals, Justine has won sixteen
National Titles. She has won those championships at every level
starting with the Under 16 age group and progressing to the Senior Level
as well as at the Canadian University Championships (CIS).
Charlene Brown, 1996
Alberta Female Adult Fast Pitch Player of the Year, grew up in the Falun
area when Falun was known as the “Fastball Capital of Alberta” so it was
almost a given that she should become involved in the sport. Charlene
started playing when she was six and as she progressed through the age
groups she took part in sixteen provincial championships, becoming one
of the best female pitchers in Alberta, and competing at the
National Championships six times.
Chuck Hebert moved to
Wetaskiwin in 1996 to teach high school Physical Education at Wetaskiwin
Composite High School and to act as the school’s Athletic Director.
During Chuck's nineteen-year tenure at WCHS students/teams have won over
twenty Provincial Championships. Chuck himself was coach or assistant
coach in five different sports and won fourteen Provincial Championships
and twenty-five zone championships. Chuck also founded the Wetaskiwin
Minor Basketball Association.
George Hunerfauth
immigrated to Canada from Switzerland when he was a young man. After
traveling across Canada he discovered a welcoming community in
Wetaskiwin and settled here. In 1967 he had a vision for a unique
community enterprise - the Wetaskiwin North-Am International Snowmobile
Race. His vision became a reality in 1968 and within a few years of its
inauguration the race attracted 20,00 spectators, was covered by
national media and drew competitors from across Canada and the United
States.
1977 Wetaskiwin Legion
Bantam Fastball Team
1979 Wetaskiwin Sport Shop Midget Fastball Team
The 1977 Wetaskiwin Legion
Bantam and the Wetaskiwin Sport Shop Midget Fastball Teams are being
inducted into the Wetaskiwin and County Sports Hall of Fame for winning
two Provincial Titles and two Western Canadian titles. To date they are
the only teams that have been inducted that were able to win both the
Provincial and the Western Canadian Championships and incredibly they
were able to accomplish the feat twice! Although not all of the men
being inducted played on both teams a core group were members of both
teams. When the boys were younger, some of them were also together on
teams that won the provincial title in 1973 as Mites and again in 1975
as Peewees.
